Quality vs. Compression

Do you hate visiting sites that have images with poor quality. Maybe they look fuzzy, blurry or pixelated? How about when you stumble upon a web site that has very detailed images that take forever (or so it seems) to load? Images that are too large and cannot be displayed correctly on your LCD/monitor? This could be one of several reasons. The quality of the image or graphic could be poor to begin with, designed at the wrong resolution, saved with the wrong amount of compression or as the wrong file type.

A couple weeks ago I had a customer call in and complain about his current website, that it had poor graphics. I proceeded to inspect the website and found that the graphics were outdated and saved as the wrong file type and over-compressed. In only a short amount of time, I was able to re-create a Flash animation for him using the “preserve transparency” attribute and then re-create some graphics utilized on his site and saved them using the perfect balance of quality/compression. The graphics and animation are now smaller in file size, take less time to load and much more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Saying the graphics improved the site is an understatement.
